Let’s just state this upfront: despite a general respect for Jeff Nichols and the majority of its cast, I hold about zero interest in their new collaboration, Loving. Such antipathy can be chalked up to, well, almost everything I’ve heard about it, given the extent to which even positive reviews — including our own! — have made it sound more like a well-dressed civics lesson than cinematically dynamic piece of work from a talented young director.
All that said, I can be grateful to Loving for giving us a decent-sized conversation between James Gray and Nichols, two of the more even-keeled craftsmen working in American cinema today. The DGA have kindly posted the conversation in podcast form for your listening pleasure. Let’s hope something similar happens next year with The Lost City of Z — it mightily deserves the spotlight.
