Two months ago, no one knew it existed — at least in its current form. Now Dan Trachtenberg‘s 10 Cloverfield Lane is in wide release, and it’s an experience we highly recommend. After coming out of the theater, many will wonder exactly how (or if) it connects to Matt Reeves‘ 2008 feature, and now confirmation has come in from the director himself. When asked by Screen Crush (in the video below) if it takes place in the same universe, he answered, “Yes. I mean certainly not the same timeline, but I think now we may see more movies unfolding and connecting in ways that are unexpected.”
As for what to expect down the line, he adds, “I think now Cloverfield could be a signal to the audience not only of a certain tone and a certain genre, but now it’s also a platform for these original stories to be told. I think the original Cloverfield is one of the most unique movies and a really cool way into a very familiar genre and we also are a very unique way into a very familiar genre and going forward in success, should we be given it, I’m sure J.J. [Abrams] would be stoked to make more really cool original movies in this vein.”
The director also joined his producer to talk more about the feature in a 1.5-hour podcast for Nerdist. Abrams discusses how 10 Cloverfield Lane was the antidote to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, getting motion sickness with Cloverfield, memories of The Twilight Zone, how the film pulls off a mix of genres, exactly how he was involved with Trachtenberg’s debut, and much more.
