It’s been nearly 25 years since Jake Gyllenhaal arrived on screens with City Slickers, but it seems like it’s only been the last handful of films in which he’s found a specific groove. While films such as Zodiac and Brokeback Mountain feature some of his best performances, following Prisoners, Enemy and Nightcrawler, he’s crafted some incredible characters. We now have news of his next potential project, thanks to THR.
He is currently in talks to star in The Current War with Benedict Cumberbatch, which is a project from The Weinstein Company that will be directed by Me and Earl and the Dying Girl helmer Alfonso Gomez-Rejon. Michael Mitnick‘s Black List script is set in the “late-1880s and revolves around power titans Edison and Westinghouse’s battle over the supply of electricity. Edison championed direct current (DC) for electric power distribution over alternating current (AC), which was backed by several European companies and Westinghouse Electric.”
Despite how one may feel about Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Gomez-Rejon showed some kinetic directing chops, which will hopefully translate well here. He plans to shoot the film next year, following Collateral Beauty. For fans of Gyllenhaal, we also have a great one-hour, career-spanning interview with Off Camera. He discusses not understanding how to handle talent and technique at an early age, his current preparation for roles, and much more. Check it out below.
