Universal has given the go ahead for production of Whales. The film is about the rescue efforts to save a family of gray whales who became trapped under the Arctic Circle in 1988; it is based on a true story. John Krasinksi will play the reporter who breaks the story, while Drew Barrymore will play a Greenpeace activist coming to the aid of the astray cetaceans.
This story is an interpretation of a real event that temporarily halted the Cold War in the 80s, as biologists from both the USA and the Soviet Union put their politics aside and did some real good in the world. This is an interesting concept, as political currency is currently blanketing the Gulf Coast, but I digress.
Ken Kwapis (License To Wed) will direct the film, while Jack Amiel and Mike Begler penned the script. I recently watched Away We Go starring John Krasinksi and I have to admit, the guy has potential. Initially I thought he would always be Jim Halpert, but after that movie, I think he has what it takes to break from that character and really make some magic. Although this seems like a pretty generic role in a family film, we will have to see if he is able to do anything with it.
What do you think of the flick Whales? How about a Krasinski/Barrymore onscreen romance?
