Lorene Scafaria is set to make her directorial debut with her self-scribed romantic comedy Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. The film stars Steve Carell as a man who finds love (with Keira Knightley) at the worst possible time.

With the film set to shoot this month in Los Angeles, Indian Paintbrush and Mandate Pictures, who are co-financing the feature, are happy to announce (via THR) that Focus Features has already secured the domestic distribution rights. So expect to see this offbeat rom-com in theaters in 2012.

Scafaria may be best known for Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, which she effectively adapted from the pop YA novel. While she has little else to her screen credit, I’m intrigued by this project’s premise and its cast, even though the 23-year age gap between Knightley and Carell gives me pause. Plus, Focus Features has a pretty solid scorecard.

How about you? What do you think of Seeking a Friend at the End of the World?
