Universal, making their dwindling ends meet with the drawn-out Fast and Furious franchise over the last few years, has its hearts (or is it piggy banks?) set on another one just like it: Terminator. And they’d like their keeper of the Furious Justin Lin – to take on what could be Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s official return to acting. Now, to be fair, the report is that the studio is “looking for a directing vehicle for Justin Lin,” so that kind of generality leaves everything very open-ended. His Fast Five writer Chris Morgan (Wanted, 47 Ronin) will most likely be part of that next directing gig. [Deadline]

This is a strange franchise. Not to long ago,the thing was in bankruptcy court thanks to the mediocrity of Terminator Salvation‘s box office take. Sony Pictures and Lionsgate ended up walking away from what is relatively cheap property ($30 million) for a large studio. Now, we’re talking about it again as thought it’s hot to trot.

In a year with 27 sequels, I guess it’s not that surprising.

Do want to see another Terminator movie? Directed by the man who gave us Annapolis?
