Although exemplary writing and acting duties on the Before series have earned Julie Delpy extra-special commendation as a creative voice, her work as writer, actor, and director receives far less notice. (Analysts refer to this pattern as “The Hawke Bump.”) With her sixth feature, Lolo (co-written by Eugénie Grandval), premiering later this year, the first trailer is now upon us.
Consider expectations created by her best-known work. By all appearances, this is less a comment on the harrowing effects of time and far more of a relationship comedy that mixes the middle-aged romances of Enough Said and childrens’ interferences that marked the Duplass brothers’ Cyrus. That there’s a lack of subtitles is hardly any issue — he drops a giant fish into her lap! the man hangs the kid out the window! — if not actually a poor reflection on the film itself. Based on both what’s seen and how many times over Delpy’s proven herself a skilled writer, Lolo‘s likely to prove a pleasant time at theaters.

Danny Boon and Vincent Lacoste also star in Lolo, which does not yet have a U.S. distributor.
