Just as filming as begins down in the East Village of New York City, it appears Julianne Moore has joined Another Bullshit Night In Suck City. The film, starring Robert De Niro and Paul Dano as father and son, is written and directed by Paul Weitz, based on the memoir by Nick Flynn.
Both Weitz brothers, both Paul and Chris, have found the money to make their respective passion projects happen, which is commendable. The first trailer for Chris Weitz’s A Better Life just recently premiered, promising a Bicycle Thieves– like morality tale. Suck City will tell of a 20-something young man named Nick Flynn (Dano) who, working for homeless shelters across Boston, runs into his eccentric, brilliant and homeless father Jonathan (De Niro). Flynn’s father describes homeless night in Boston through idioms not unlike the title of the film.
The Suck City production has sent out a casting call for “a stand-in for Julianne [Moore] who is available between 4.1 and 4.20.” Who the talented actress will play in the film is still unknown, but one would imagine a shelter co-worker of Nick’s, who, wait for it, becomes a love interest. But then Moore is in that strange middle age where she could play an estranged mother to a 20-something or an above-age lover. I can’t help thinking of the Patricia Arquette role in the Martin Scorsese film Bringing Out The Dead.
Update: Olivia Thirlby has also joined the cast, Deadline reports. The star of Juno and The Wackness will play “Denise, the love interest who helps get him [De Niro] the job at the shelter.”
