After 2009’s critically mixed box-office disappointment that was Judd Apatow‘s Funny People, I’ve been waiting to hear what project the director will create next. With the first news from Deadline, we still don’t know. But we do know when we can see it. They report Universal has set a release date of June 1, 2012 for the next comedy he’ll write, produce and direct. This is a week after Men In Black 3 and a week before Andrew Stanton‘s John Carter of Mars.

Although not directing, he has stayed busy since Funny People. He produced this year’s Get Him To The Greek as well as the Kristen Wiig comedy debuting early next year, Bridesmaids. 2011 also sees three more producing projects for Apatow; Role Models director David Wain‘s Wanderlust, his wife Leslie Mann‘s comedy Business Trip, as well as the return of a new  Pee-wee Herman feature film. No director for that has been announced, but I’d find it hard to believe it would be Apatow, since he isn’t writing the script. We will update you when we hear more on his next project.

Should Apatow try another drama/comedy mix or stick with straight comedy?
