With his latest film Journey 2: The Mysterious Island 3D hitting theaters in mid February, director Brad Peyton isn’t wasting any time setting up his latest project. According to Variety, the relatively new-to-Hollywood director has just sold the pitch Invasion to Cary Granat‘s Reel FX banner.
Peyton is set to produce the project, as well as direct the script written by J. Daniel Shaffer — his only other writing credits include Breyton Ave, which actually made 2011’s Black List (here’s a link to the entire list). Andrew Adamson will produce under his Strange Weather Films title.
Shaffer‘s script “revolves around a group of unarmed, unprepared students from Philadelphia who discover they’ll have to become soldiers to survive an attack from a supernatural force.” If you’re getting déjà vu back to 2008 and a certain Matt Reeves directed horror/sci-fi/mystery film, that’s because Invasion has been described to be in the same “vein [as] Cloverfield“.
Peyton has also directed Cats and Dogs: Revenge of Kitty Glore as well as the inevitable sequel to Journey 2, which is gearing up for pre-production. He’s also had his hand in several projects on TV, including the pilot for Dr. Dimensionpants, a show he created as well. Invasion will be Petyon‘s first time not directing a completely family oriented film, which will show us if he has the ability to cross over into other genres.
