I’ll be damned, this is actually happening. Last week we reported that Joss Whedon was a leading contender to direct The Avengers, now Deadline says Marvel is in final negotiations with the Firefly/Buffy helmer. The film would feature Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), as well as SHIELD leader Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).

Every geek knows what ‘The Avengers’ are. For those who don’t know they are a combination of Marvel superheroes including Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, The Hulk, and Ant-Man. Likewise, every geek knows who Joss Whedon is. And again for those of you with lives, he is creator of cult tv shows like Firefly, Doll House, and of course Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Well every geek in the world will be passing out when they hear the IESB exclusive. Joss Whedon is being named the leader of contenders in a short list of directors to make The Avengers movie. The only other name known is Louis Leterrier who did The Incredible Hulk and most recently Clash of the Titans. There is no question who should get this. Whedon would be beyond perfect.
The Avengers is set for a May 2012 release.
Are you excited Whedon will be directing The Avengers?
