Asger Leth‘s 2006 documentary on Haitian gangs, Ghosts of Cité Soleil, was a fascinating, gritty feature. Now, Production Weekly reports (via The Playlist) that he has his next project lined up with Josh Brolin. Waterbug is based on the 1993 Italian film La Scorta. While it was supposed to be a remake, it has now “developed into a different story centering a man on a mission to protect his son after his wife is brutally murdered in the gritty world of Mexican drug cartels.” Peter Craig, who wrote Ben Affleck‘s upcoming drama, The Town, has written the script, which was originally supposed to star Sean Penn.
Josh Brolin has quite a packed year, with Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Jonah Hex, Woody Alllen‘s You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger. Shooting also starts very soon on the Coen‘s True Grit, which comes out Christmas Day 2010.
Waterbug will start filming in Mexico this May.
