After just over a decade out of the spotlight – and one misstep called Shortbus – writer/actor/director John Cameron Mitchell is reportedly in the process of producing a follow up to his inspired rock musical, Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
Written by Mitchell and composer Stephen Trask, the story of an East German transsexual glam rocker who tries to launch a career in the U.S. has spawned a successful stage production, but the possibility of a sequel was unforeseen. However, writer Kevin Sessums revealed in a blog post that Mitchell – who’s apparently a friend of his – is “putting the finishing touches on his first draft of a Hedwig sequel.” Mitchell also divulged plans to do a reading on September 16th at a special performance at this year’s Afterglow Festival in Provincetown where he will recreate the role of Hedwig.
For now, the project – which will also see the return of Trask as composer – is reportedly only coming to life on stage, but considering the cult success of the original film, a big screen adaptation can’t be far off. As for plot, Sessums kept specific details to himself, only describing the sequel as “a phantasmagoria with dollops of brutal reality interwoven into its multi-media narrative.” I have no idea what that means, but it doesn’t stop me from looking forward to it.
