The Raid Redemption

Jaw-dropping not in scale but in its frenetic choreography, Gareth Evans crafts an action picture that brought the fighting style of silat to the big screen, and simultaneously put Indonesian action cinema on the map,” we noted, recently naming it one of the 50 greatest action films of the 21st century so far. Before the film even landed in U.S. theaters, a deal for a Hollywood remake was made by Sony/Screen Gems and producers of the original, XYZ Films. However, after six years of development here and there, nothing materialized.

It’s now moving forward with a new director as Joe Carnahan (Narc, Smokin’ Aces) has revealed he’ll be helming and producing the remake, with the “full blessing” from Evans, who will also produce. Frank Grillo, who worked with Carnahan on The Grey, is still on board to star, as evidenced in a video, which they tease it will be a “reimagining” set in Caracas, Venezuela with a different style of fighting. With Carnahan currently tied up with directing the sequel Bad Boys for Life — due out in late 2018 — don’t expect their version of The Raid before 2020.
