Although I wish this was news about Sin City 2, Bloody Disgusting reports that Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez are in talks to return to the Machete sequel, titled Machete Kills. A few months ago, the film’s director, Robert Rodriguez, stated that the aforementioned sequel would be his main priority as of now, as we just got news he’ll indeed return to Sin City right after.
Alba and Rodriguez would be reprising their roles as Agent Sartana and Luz/She, respectively, for the sequel. As for the film’s plot, it “finds Machete (Danny Trejo) recruited by the U.S. Government for a mission” of which he “must battle his way through Mexico to take down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space.” He takes on the entire army in hopes to dismantle a plan for global anarchy. Oh, how very Rodriguez.
Although I loved the original short — which was featured in the Rodriguez/Tarantino collaboration Grindhouse as a “trailer” — I can’t say Machete needed feature-length treatment. However, considering its budget, it did bring in over $40m worldwide, a respectable amount. And Rodriguez does love beating his films to a pulp (ahem, Spy Kids). I think I’ll pass on this one and just wait for Sin City: A Dame To Kill For.
What do you think of Machete Kills now that Alba and Rodriguez may be returning?
