The directorial debut of Chris Kelly, who has written a slew of work for Saturday Night Live and a few episodes of Broad City, has just been given its first trailer. Starring Jesse Plemons, Molly Shannon, Zach Woods, and Bradley Whitford, Other People follows a struggling comedy writer who goes through a break-up and returns home to care for his dying mother. Despite these cliches, the film looks to be a rather profoundly affecting blend of humor and heartbreak, dealing with family, love, death, and quite a few things in between.
We said in our review: “Sure, some of the film is tonally unfocused, flitting about from suburban Sacramento to comedy gigs in New York City, and a slightly misjudged sense that those outside The Big Apple are institutionally simpletons. But Kelly has a knack of playing tragic scenes as comic and visa-versa; the film opens with the grieving over Joanne’s death interrupted by an answer phone message by a prattish woman who had only just found out she was ill.”
