A Bigger Splash and Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino may have just lined up his next project. According to Variety, Guadagnino will helm Rio, from Locke screenwriter Steven Knight. Benedict Cumberbatch and Jake Gyllenhaal are both being considered to star and the project and simultaneously break Tumblr in the process.
The film, which will be financed by Studiocanal, follows a “financial reporter (Gyllenhaal) who travels to Rio de Janeiro to visit a wealthy friend (Cumberbatch), only to get sucked into a plot to fake his friend’s death.”
The ever-busy Knight, who created the recent FX series Taboo, has writing credits on both the upcoming David Fincher directed World War Z 2 and the non-David Fincher directed Girl With the Dragon Tattoo sequel/reboot The Girl in the Spider’s Web.
Guadagnino recently wrapped filming on his remake of Dario Argento’s Suspiria, starring Chloë Grace Moretz, Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton, with a score from Radiohead’s Thom Yorke. Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name, one of our favorite films of Sundance, will open November 24, 2017.
