With his successful relaunch of the Star Trek franchise back in May, everyone wants to know what J.J. Abrams will do next. At a press conference to commemorate the upcoming DVD/Blu-ray release of Star Trek, Abrams was questioned on that very topic. He seemed reserved on the subject, yet was willing to share his excitement of continuing his alternative Star Trek universe. Although some fans of the original series may be disappointed by this, Abrams is shooting to allure the general public (which proved to be successful with his first Star Trek release).

Being a science fiction film, many simply expect the Star Trek sequel to be shot in 3-D. Abrams stated that he stayed away from it with the first Star Trek because it was only his second feature film, and the technology was so new. However, upon seeing and being amazed by the preview footage from James Cameron‘s, “Avatar,”  Abrams has definitely been researching the technology more and considering it for the  sequel.

Some surprise in the original film came when audiences saw Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock in the original Star Trek series. If he will have involvement with the second film is still unknown. The plot is not yet developed enough to know if his character will be necessary, Abrams said. It was confirmed however that Nimoy will be appearing more in Abrams popular television series Fringe.

A lesser known fact is that Leonard Nimoy also starred in the original Mission:Impossible television show, which Abrams has also helped recreate for the big screen. A question was presented as to whether or not Nimoy would perhaps take on his original role in Abram’s upcoming Mission:Impossible 4. Abrams had no confirmation to this, however did reply with:

How cool would that be? I just got a call that Peter Graves is in great shape, which would be a very bizarre bend in the space-time continuum, for obvious reasons. I almost feel like you could make him serious again and bringing him back. Whether it’s Nimoy, who I have an incredible affinity for, or Graves, or anyone, we’ll see.

Fox, which hosts Abrams current television project, Fringe, is currently pursuing Abrams to produce a new spec project that was presented as a medical comedy. Abrams is also working on writing and producing a new television pilot which was just purchased last week by NBC Universal after a competitive bid between ABC and CBS. The plot will center around a husband and wife spy team.

J.J. Abrams definitely keeps himself busy with work, and not just in the film industry, but television as well.

Do you think that Abrams taking on so many projects at once will effect the outcome of Star Trek 2?
