There are many downsides to no new episodes of Girls airing, one of the more prominent being a dearth of its ostensible male lead, Alex Karpovsky. His onscreen personality — i.e., that drier-than-dry wit and always-perceptible impatience with human existence — is awfully enjoyable (sometimes in its well-established familiarity), and also something I’d enjoy a bit more of outside ten or so half-hour episodes per year.
Alongside Lena Dunham‘s earlier Tiny Furniture and his own, recent film work (Rubberneck and Red Flag received a limited theatrical release several months back), here’s another opportunity: over on Kickstarter (via their official site), It’s a Disaster producer Jeff Grace has launched an effort to support his new, Karpovsky-led feature, Folk Hero & Funny Guy, which is described as “[a] road trip buddy comedy about a struggling stand-up who goes on tour to open for his successful singer-songwriter best friend.” The $48,500 budget has 35 days to be fulfilled — $9,500 of this, alone, is expected to go toward “recording original music for live scenes” — and, if this is at all to your liking, contributions can be made at the provided link.
Here’s a synopsis:
“Folk Hero & Funny Guy follows Paul and Jason, childhood friends who have drifted apart as they’ve reached their 30s. Jason is a good-looking and free spirited singer-songwriter whose career is taking off, while Paul is a struggling stand-up comedian whose once promising trajectory is now in decline. They reunite when Jason passes through town on his most recent tour. A night of drinking leads Jason to offer Paul the opportunity to serve as the opening act for his upcoming solo tour. What Paul doesn’t know is that Jason has booked the tour himself in order to win back an old flame. Paul’s woes are the ideal opportunity for Jason to get his number one wingman back on board. The film takes place along the eastern seaboard as Paul and Jason drive from gig to gig.”
