After taking on the dark romantic drama Blue Valentine, then the sprawling crime epic The Place Beyond the Pines, we were surprised to learn that director Derek Cianfrance‘s next film would be a comedy of the culinary sort with Chef. First taking over the project from David Fincher and Keanu Reeves last fall, along with his Pines star Bradley Cooper, we’ve got another addition to the cast today.
According to Variety, The Weinstein Company have recruited one of their big stars from last year with The Intouchables lead Omar Sy. While Harvey Weinstein is planning a remake of the aforementioned French hit, they also released the original last spring. Sy, who also leads Michel Gondry‘s Mood Indigo, would star alongside Cooper in Chef, making for his first English-language role.
Penned by Eastern Promises writer Steven Knight, the story follows a wild child chef (Cooper) who, after battling an addiction to drugs and alcohol, assembles a crack team in his bid for a third Michelin star. But it looks like we won’t see it hit screens anytime soon, as Cooper will be busy reteaming with his Silver Linings Playbook director David O. Russell for his next project and then he’s set to take a deserved break. In the meantime, one can see Cooper and Cianfrance together in Pines, hitting theaters on March 29th.
Are you looking forward to Cianfrance working with Cooper again for Chef?
