Remember how hilarious it used to be when your friend would call you their “brother from another mother”? Well if this movie gets made, expect that to re-enter the lexicon. THR is reporting that 20th Century Fox is negotiating to pick up the John Hamburg-scripted comedy Brother From Another Mother from Dreamworks. The movie, which also has Hamburg attached as a director, tells the story of two estranged brothers with the same father, one an aimless man and the other a sheltered teenager, who get stuck on a road trip with one another for reasons not disclosed at this time. Should he stay on to direct, this would mark Hamburg’s first feature directorial gig since 2009’s I Love You, Man which starred Paul Rudd and Jason Segel.

Although the title of the movie rubs me the wrong way for personal reasons (I hate that phrase), Brother From Another Mother has a good pedigree behind it in Hamburg. Yes, he’s responsible for writing all three installments in the Meet the Parents trilogy, as well as Along Came Polly, but the writer/director has also struck gold with the script for Zoolander (I guess this is a great time to note that Hamburg frequently collaborates with Stiller) as well as directorial stints on the late Fox show Undeclared and more recently, the current Fox show New Girl. And then there’s obviously I Love You, Man which ran a little too long but still had some tremendously funny moments even though it unforgivably helped to launch the shudder-inducing word “bromance” into pop culture. Point is, Hamburg has comedy chops and Brother From Another Mother has a good chance of being a funny comedy. But let’s reserve any judgment for casting announcements, trailers and other sorts of tangible information should Fox actually get this movie made.

Any interest in Brother From Another Mother? What do you think of Hamburg’s body of work?
