It’s no surprise some recent successful films are getting the sequel treatment. Another long rumored one got a new update.
The first is for Dreamworks Animation How To Train Your Dragon, which has steadily been tearing up the box office the last few weeks. The company announced a sequel planned for 2013. CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said the following.
“2010 is off to a strong start, thanks in large part to the performance of How to Train Your Dragon, which – having grossed nearly $375 million to date in worldwide box office – has become DreamWorks Animation’s next franchise. We plan to release the sequel theatrically in 2013. 3D continues to have a tremendous impact on the industry at large and we are now looking forward with great anticipation to bringing Shrek Forever After, the final chapter in our beloved Shrek series and the first in 3D, to audiences across the globe next month.”
Dragon is one of the best films of the year and I can only hope directors Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders return for this one. If Dreamworks ruins the franchise by pouring out countless sequels (a la Shrek) I won’t be very happy.
Next up Deadline is reporting that WB is planning a Clash of the Titans sequel as early as spring 2012. Director Louis Leterrier will not return, but star Sam Worthington will be back. Greg Berlanti will write the script pretty fast as they hope to shoot before Worthington does Avatar 2. It’s kind of odd we may see another Avatar/Titans combo back-to-back again. I thought this year’s Titans was a decent action blockbuster, but there is no way I’m excited for a sequel.
Lastly, Anchorman director Adam McKay talked to MTV News about a sequel to his 2004 comedy classic.
“It’s a tricky movie because everyone went and did really well after it, so everyone’s prices went up and everyone’s time got a little more valuable. But at the same time, graciously, Steve and Paul and everyone agreed to cut their price to come and do [the sequel], which you don’t see very often in Hollywood — and cut their price substantially. But even with that, it’s just a budgetary thing with Paramount in terms of how much they’ll give us to make it.”
Production could begin as early as 2011 for the sequel. I loved the first and can’t wait to see the characters return.
Oh, there is also a Journey To The Center of the Earth planned, but is anyone really excited?
