After diving into the cinema of the extreme as it relates to David Cronenberg, today brings a detailed look at one his most gruesome, memorable shots. Available on Criterion Blu-ray this week is the Canadian director’s 1981 feature, Scanners, and to go along with the release, we have a new featurette that explores exactly how they pulled off that exploding head visual.
Featuring interviews with Cronenberg’s crew, it’s part of a 23-minute documentary on the disc titled The Scanners Way, which looks into all the visual effects. So, if you’re looking to pull off this specific, mind-blowing (sorry) effect, grab some hamburgers and hit play. Also part of the disc is Cronenberg’s first feature, the 1969 Stereo, and one can see additional art by Connor Willumsen for the release below.
