While I hold my breath waiting for my edgy Secret Squirrel spec script to be picked up, Variety is reporting that retro Hanna-Barbera cartoon Hong Kong Phooey is getting the film treatment from writer David Goodman (executive producer Family Guy) and director Alex Zamm (Dr. Dolittle: Million Dollar Mutts, Inspector Gadget 2).
According to Variety:
Project’s an adaptation of the 1970s Hanna-Barbera animated TV series, about a police station janitor who becomes a dog with mystical powers, including the ability to do kung fu.
But those of us in the know recognize that Hong Kong Phooey doesn’t become a dog with mystical powers, he’s always a dog who just happens to also be a janitor. A small but important distinction of the like journalists are sometimes forced to make.
The film is said to be a mix of live-action and animation, and I’m assuming it’ll be in the vein of the recent Alvin and the Chipmunks. No casting or release date has been announced.
Did you watch Hong Kong Phooey growing up? Are you ready for a film adaptation?
