Hobo With A Shotgun began its life as a fake trailer, created by Canadian filmmakers Jason Eisner, John Davies, and Rob C0tterill as an entry into a contest being held by Robert Rodriguez (co-director of the double feature exploitation homage Grindhouse) at South by Southwest in Austin, TX. After winning the contest, the trailer ran before Canadian showings of the film and select U.S. theaters and in theory, that should have been the end of the road. That is not the case, however, as Hobo With A Shotgun has become a full length feature, with Rutger Hauer in the title role (in case you’re confused, a hobo wielding a shotgun). A teaser trailer debuted earlier this year, and now the teaser poster has also been released. Thanks to the folks at First Showing (and Ain’t It Cool News), I present it before you now:
This movie has been on my radar ever since I heard Rutger Hauer was taking the lead role (and playing a hero for once), and after watching the trailer I was already game to see it. This teaser poster however seals the deal and the second this becomes available either theatrically or on DVD, I am there opening day. If you need more convincing, here’s the trailer that premiered awhile back:
I don’t know about you folks, but this may slap the face off Machete to be the best fake trailer turned movie to come out of Grindhouse. Not that there’s a lot of films vying for that, but just roll with it.
There is no release date set yet, but principal photography is completed. I’m thinking it’ll hit film festivals (probably the more genre-oriented ones, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for South by Southwest) and then either get a real theatrical run or go straight to DVD. Either way, this is one of the must watch on my radar.
What do you think of the Hobo With A Shotgun poster/trailer? Are you excited, or do you want the exploitation of exploitation films to go away?
