Actress Heather Graham’s marketability has waned a bit, but that doesn’t make her any less likeable. Her bubbly sex appeal and comedic talent keep her career afloat, but besides The Hangover, big film offers are still hard to come by. That’s why it’s fortunate that she’s still offered lead roles, even if it’s for something as perplexing as Compulsion.
Directed by Egidio Coccimiglio, Compulsion stars Graham as a chef who becomes obsessed with her former child star neighbor (played by The Matrix star Carrie-Anne Moss). Though it’s listed as a drama thriller, the trailer makes it look weirdly campy – as I watched, I was reminded of John Waters circa Pecker and Cecil B. DeMented. The overacting gives it a tongue-in-cheek vibe, right down to the ridiculously unsexy girl-on-girl makeout scenes. I hope these were motivated choices, because if not, I feel bad for those involved with this bizarre looking film. See trailer and synopsis below.
Synopsis:
Amy (Heather Graham) is a vivacious and charismatic gourmet chef, with a dangerous appetite. She uses the most sensual of cuisine to lure her prey and turn them into victims of her twisted methods of controlling relationships and creating intimacy. When Amy realizes her new neighbor Saffron (Carrie-Anne Moss) is the former child star she has always idolized, she uses her prowess in the kitchen in an attempt to dominate her.
Compulsion also stars Kevin Dillon and Joe Mantegna. The indie opens in theaters on June 21st.
