Although I seemed to be one of the few that was unimpressed by Michael Caine‘s Taken-esque turn in Harry Brown, there were a few tense sections and I remain interested in director Daniel Barber‘s next film. We now know what it will be, thanks to THR.
The thriller is called Substitution (not to be confused with this year’s Bad Teacher or Detention) and has been described as a Strangers on a Train-esque thriller, only in high school. Alcon Entertainment is putting the project together, which follows “a substitute teacher who coerces a high school student in a murders-swapping plot.”
The script comes from Ian Shorr, who gave us the thoroughly disturbing indie horror film Splinter. A lot of films tend to compare themselves to Hitchcock classics to get recognition, but if he can truly recreate the feeling of one of my favorites from that director, it will be a success. If you have yet to see Harry Brown it is now streaming on Netflix, and worth it for just the harrowing opening scene.
Are you a Harry Brown fan? What do you think about the Substitution plot?
