Halle Berry is the perfect actress for Paul Verhoeven (Showgirls, Basic Instinct), so much so that it defies logic the pair haven’t worked together yet. Berry has always reminded me of another Verhoeven muse (and her own costar in Catwoman), Sharon Stone; stunningly beautiful, marginally talented but capable of bringing the right amount of crazy needed to a role. I get chills thinking about how awesome it could have been if Verhoeven had been the director on Catwoman instead!
But I digress, apparently Verhoeven had been planning a star vehicle for Berry (via Badass Digest) called The Surrogate but that project has been scrapped in favor of a different film called The Student. In this film Berry would play a wife that ends up romantically involved with her husband’s 19 year old intern. Gosh, have I missed the erotic thriller genre and I am thrilled to have Berry and Verhoeven on board to bring it back!
Despite critical acclaim for his 2006’s film Black Book, it is good to see Verhoeven getting back to his schlocky roots. Even that film had glimmers of the tawdry Dutch auteur we all know and love. Berry was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for her riveting performance as a 70’s stripper with multiple personality disorders in Frankie and Alice.
