Since there’s technically no Michael Bay blockbuster hitting theaters this summer, it’s up to another director deliver some large-scale mayhem and, thankfully, the man for the job is Guillermo del Toro. We already got a trailer for his monsters vs. robots actioner Pacific Rim and even a few positive reactions from the first test screening and now the director has provided Total Film with a few new images.
Once again showing off the scale, we can see a snow-strewn new image above. Below, we have a skull-like structure embedded in the cityscape, followed by some car-wrecking mayhem and then one featuring our main robot. When it comes to a possible sequel, del Toro sat down with the magazine, and said that he’s been working with co-writer Travis Beacham on a script but don’t expect it anytime soon. He says they plan to “take however long it takes to really find out the idea and try to bridge something that really makes the mythology roll.” In the meantime, he’ll be shooting his ghost story Crimson Peak which is set for a production next spring and already has Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam and Emma Stone lined up to star.
Details have been spare, but the director opened up briefly, saying, “It’s the turn of the century. So it’s at the turn of the century and half of the movie takes place in America, and the other half takes place in a crumbling mansion in Cumbria. And basically it’s a ghost story and gothic romance, trying to subvert the rules of the usual gothic romance…the first half is a love story, then that love story turns darker. And it’s at the same time a ghost story. I’m working at this moment with Lucinda Clarkson who is a really great playwright from the UK. She has the proper degree of perversity and intelligence to turn it into something interesting to watch.” We’re definitely looking forward to any sort of twist del Toro can provide on a gothic romance, but in the meantime one can check out the concept art above and below.
Pacific Rim opens on July 12th.
