There’s less than a month to go until David Fincher‘s first film in three years, an adaptation of Gillian Flynn‘s bestseller Gone Girl, arrives. Leading up to the release, there’s been much talk how (or if) it differs from the source material and with the final film now complete and screening for various press, we have some more insight. Despite word that the third act has been ripped apart and put back together, New York TimesCara Buckley says, “Contrary to early speculation, the film hews closely to the book.” Now, we’ll have to wait and see exactly what that entails, but judging from a few more early reactions, Fincher has turned out strong work.

For more insight on what to expect, composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross sat down with Wall Street Journal regarding their third collaboration with the director. “[Fincher] said, ‘Think about the really terrible music you hear in massage parlors,'” Reznor told the outlet regarding their inspiration. “The way that it artificially tries to make you feel like everything’s OK. And then imagine that sound starting to curdle and unravel.”

Fincher adds that “calming, placating music” was on his mind. “The movie is about the facade of the good neighbor, the good Christian, the good wife. So the notion was to start with music that’s attempting to give you a hug.” With a score composed of “lilting, haunting synths interspersed with doleful piano melodies and accentuated by the orchestral arrangements,” we can wait to see the results. In the meantime, check out a batch of new images above and below.
