girlhood-001

Although those who felt Boyhood was a bit too insular in how (or simply because) it focused on a straight, white American male from a middle-class suburban environment aren’t certain to appreciate Girlhood because it focuses on black, teenage females from France, one can understand why this feels like a breath of fresh air as the other ‘hood earns plaudit after plaudit. And if one of our 10 films to see this month isn’t being sold on much but the sight of young girls enjoying one another’s company — nevertheless in light of a heated confrontation with another group — word on it has been very good, rendering all else meaningless.

You’d be advised to watch the trailer, still, if only for a nice preview of how contemporary French life is filtered through a different perspective — specifically that of Céline Sciamma, whose work on Tomboy and Water Lilies already display an adept eye for female stories. That we’re (supposedly) getting more of that, and so soon, plays no small part in getting 2015 off to a good start.

Synopsis:

Fed up with her abusive family situation, lack of school prospects and the “boys’ law” in the neighborhood, Marieme starts a new life after meeting a group of three free-spirited girls. She changes her name, her style, drops out of school and starts stealing to be accepted into the gang. When her home situation becomes unbearable, Marieme seeks solace in an older man who promises her money and protection. Realizing this sort of lifestyle will never result in the freedom and independence she truly desires, she finally decides to take matters into her own hands.

Girlhood opens in limited release on January 30.

Have you been fond of Sciamma’s prior work, and, if so, does this trailer hint toward a worthy continuation?
