It’s a case of Gemma meeting Gemma when one of Hollywood’s leading actresses takes on a new screen adaptation.
It was reported by Allocine (via The Playlist) that Gemma Arterton will lead the screen version of Posy Simmonds’ graphic novel Gemma Bovery. Gustave Flaubert’s classic novel gets a modern twist in Simmonds’ work, which follows the story of an English woman who marries a man she doesn’t love and moves to France. It’s told through the perspective of Raymond Joubert , a French literature-loving baker who steps in when he notices the parallels between Bovery and Flaubert’s ill-fated heroine. The project marks the second time Arterton has worked with Simmonds – in 2010, she played the titular character in director Stephen Frears‘ take on the writer’s comic strip Tamara Drewe.
It was also confirmed that Arterton will be joined by French actor Fabrice Luchini, who, based on his age and appearance, will most likely play Joubert. Anne Fontaine (Coco Before Chanel) will direct the comedy, which is scheduled for production this summer.
Have you read Gemma Bovery? Do you think Arterton is a good choice for the role?
