As each television channel scrambles for pilots and series returns for next fall, Fox announced a mid-season series, Terra Nova, produced by Steven Spielberg, Peter Chernin, Brannon Braga and David Fury.

The show focuses on a family on a time-traveling journey to Prehistoric Earth, fending off dinosaurs and the like. They, of course, must do this in order to save the human race. [Coming Soon]

Here’s the picture again:

Does this remind anyone of Land of the Lost – both the television show and the bad movie? Or like a B-version of Pandora, sans floating trees?

Maybe they cost Fox too much money.

The problem with television shows like this is that they always cost too much money. Even successful actioners like 24 (also produced by Fox) run out of steam because of the price tag. And while names like Spielberg may get people to stay in, sit down and watch the pilot of Terra Nova, a world with Avatar and District 9 in theaters will surely get them right back up and into theaters by episode 3.

Let’s hope the story’s more interesting than it sounds.
