After writing the Jim Carrey comedy Yes Man, Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel made their directorial debut The D Train, which debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Picked up by IFC Films, the first trailer has now landed ahead of a release in May. The comedy follows Jack Black‘s character as he attempts to recruit the “cool kid” back from high school (James Marsden) to generate interest in their reunion.
We said in our review, “By the third act of The D Train, there’s a lot of ideas being thrown around. Stuff like male sexuality identity and perceived social status collide as the climactic reunion begins, but none of it feels fully thought out. Just as Dan must jump in front of all of his lies, Oliver must admit to himself who and what he really is. There’s honesty here in these revelations, but they exist in world that’s built to show us all of the things we don’t like about ourselves without fully understanding what any of it means.” Check out the trailer and poster below for the film also starring Kathryn Hahn, Jeffrey Tambor, and Mike White.
All his life, Dan Landsman (Jack Black) has never been the cool guy. That’s about to change – if he can convince Oliver Lawless (Marsden), the most popular guy from his high school who’s now the face of a national Banana Boat ad campaign, to show up with him to their class reunion. A man on a mission, Dan travels from Pittsburgh to LA and spins a web of lies to recruit Lawless. But he gets more than he bargains for as the unpredictable Lawless proceeds to take over his home, career, and entire life. Showcasing Jack Black and James Marden’s most outrageous performances to date, THE D TRAIN serves up the question: how far would you go to be popular? Co-starring Kathryn Hahn and Jeffrey Tambor.
The D Train opens on May 8th.
