After a string of “prestige” (i.e. Oscar bait) features, director Stephen Daldry looks to be going off the beaten path a bit with his latest drama, Trash. Based on the novel of the same name by Andy Mulligan and scripted by Love Actually’s Richard Curtis, he shot fairly under-the-radar, on location in Brazil. Ahead of an international release this fall, the first trailer has now landed.
The film tracks three boys (Rickson Tevez, Eduardo Luis and Gabriel Weinstein) who scrape a living picking through rubbish mounds. Also starring Rooney Mara, Martin Sheen, and Wagner Moura, the trio of boys soon discover a leather bag, whose contents plunge them into a terrifying adventure, pitting their wits against corruption and authority to put right a terrible wrong.
The first trailer reveals a much more frenetic, City of God-esque approach than expected from Daldry. It also looks like Mara and Sheen’s roles aren’t as substantial as we thought, but with a debut expected at fall festivals, we’ll find out soon. While there’s no U.S. subtitles yet, we’ll update when they arrive, and one can see the preview below.
Trash will be released internationally this fall, but no U.S. date has been set yet.
