After rebooting Star Trek with a bang back in 2009, one could say J.J. Abrams offered up diminished returns with the follow-up Star Trek Into Darkness. As he dedicated the last few years of his life to another Star-related film, some fresh directing blood was brought in with Justin Lin, who also rejuvenated the Fast and Furious franchise. Ahead of a summer release, we now have the first trailer for Star Trek Beyond.
“They haven’t really gone on their five-year mission, so what we experienced in the TV show hasn’t been touched on yet,” Lin tells Deadline. “There’s still a lot to be mined from these characters, and the mission sets up an opportunity for exploration and the deeper you go, the more you are examining humanity. Those are the things that I absorbed as a kid and hope to tap into and embrace and celebrate.”
Along with featuring the return of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, and Anton Yelchin (and even composer Michael Giacchino), newcomers to the series include Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella. Check out the trailer below.
Star Trek Beyond opens on July 22nd, 2016.
