Following up his drama Weekend, it looks like director Andrew Haigh has created an even more accomplished film with Weekend. Led by Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay, the film had the rare feat of picking up both top acting prizes at this year’s Berlin Film Festival. Set for a U.K. release on August 28th, but no U.S. date yet from Sundance Selects yet, the first trailer has now arrived.
We said in our glowing review, “Haigh’s direction is equally subtle yet assured, avoiding any ostentation that could distract from his characters’ emotional trajectory. The handheld camera usually hangs back, at times literally peeking from behind bookcases or doorframes (a technique often employed in Weekend as well). Although observational, this approach isn’t voyeuristic. Instead, it preserves the scenes’ necessary intimacy, bolstering their authenticity. Few filmmakers – Richard Linklater comes to mind – have proved themselves able of realizing such discerning and finely drawn portraits of adult love. While the conclusion of 45 Years is hardly uplifting, we are nonetheless left thankful for having had the privilege of truthfully and thoroughly exploring a genuine relationship, wrinkles and all.”

Written and directed by Andrew Haigh, 45 Years is based on a short story by David Constantine and follows Kate and Geoff Mercer (Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay) in the week leading up to a party to celebrate their 45th anniversary. But when the body of Geoff’s first love, Katya, is found in a Swiss glacier where he lost her 50 years earlier, it brings up some long buried insecurities about the foundation of their relationship.
