We’re still waiting on word if we’ll see Terrence Malick‘s next two films before the year’s end, but thankfully we’ll get another project featuring the director shortly. Premiering at Sundance is The Better Angels, easily one of our most-anticipated films of the festival, which is produced by Malick and is directed by A.J. Edwards, an editor on To the Wonder and collaborator on The Tree of Life and The New World.
Following the early days of The Great Emancipator’s life, the black-and-white production stars Jason Clarke, Diane Kruger, Brit Marling, and Wes Bentley, and today brings our first look at footage. Although this first teaser and pair of clips are brief, they hint at a film very much in the style of Malick’s world, aided by an original score from Hanan Townshend (Knight of Cups, To the Wonder). Led by newcomer Braydon Denney, check out the poster and images below.
Update: Clips and teaser removed at the request of the producers.
Set in the early 1800’s and spanning nearly three years in the stark wilderness of Indiana, THE BETTER ANGELS tells of the boyhood hardships that shaped Abraham Lincoln, the tragedy that marked him forever and the two women who guided him to immortality. Written and directed by the Austin-based Edwards, the film employs a narrative poetry and stunning black-and-white cinematography to express the world of young Abe and his family, creating a portrait both spare and tender.
The Better Angels premieres on January 18th at Sundance 2014.
