Few festivals are as welcoming to first-time filmmakers as Sundance and this year was no different. After helming a few shorts, Jordan Vogt-Roberts delivered his directorial debut with The Kings of Summer (previously titled Toy’s House) and it was major success, getting quickly acquired by CBS Films for a summer release. Previously set for a June bow against Man of Steel, it has now moved up a few weeks to May 31st and we’ve got the first teaser.

Taken from the very beginning of the film (and then repeated later on), it shows our main trio producing some music in the woods and flashes in a batch of critics quotes. In my review I remarked how loved the cinematography here, “filled with compelling imagery and kinetic editing,” but for a “film clearly attempting to hit the funnybone, the script only comes off amusing and doesn’t often hit a comedic stride.” Still, its well worth checking it out and one can see the teaser below for the film starring Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso, Moises Arias, Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, Alison Brie and Mary Lynn Rajskub.

Synopsis:

Premiering to rave reviews at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, THE KINGS OF SUMMER is a unique coming-of-age comedy about three teenage friends – Joe (Nick Robinson), Patrick (Gabriel Basso) and the eccentric and unpredictable Biaggio (Moises Arias) – who, in the ultimate act of independence, decide to spend their summer building a house in the woods and living off the land. Free from their parents’ rules, their idyllic summer quickly becomes a test of friendship as each boy learns to appreciate the fact that family – whether it is the one you’re born into or the one you create – is something you can’t run away from.

The Kings of Summer arrives on May 31st.
