Zoe Saldana is emerging to be quite the action star with her performances in Avatar and Star Trek and her upcoming role as an assassin in Colombiana. With Milla Jovavich‘s run in Resident Evil coming to an end and Angelina Jolie‘s grip on the guntoting sexpot archetype loosening, there is more than enough room for Saldana to make her mark and with her sci-fi/action pedigree there isn’t a better choice!

The film, which is written/directed by Luc Besson (The Professional) will chronicle the story of a Cat (Saldana) who witnessed the murder of her parents as a child. As an adult, she is a stone cold assassin in South America and is on a quest to find the man responsible for her parent’s murder.
Although I’m definitely open to the idea of Saldana starring in a high profile actioneer, the assassin subgenre is awfully played out these days so hopefully her performance and Besson’s script will rise above the genre enough for this to be a hit.
Colombiana hits theaters fall 2011.
