If you were one of the few that saw Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar-nominated Dogtooth last year, you probably either hated or loved it. One thing is for sure though; you have yet to forget it. I thought it was a bold, audacious drama that was an effective commentary on sheltering and family life, deserving a spot on my Top 10 Films of 2010.
Lanthimos is back with a “darker” and “funnier” follow-up titled Alps, which will go to the edges of each extreme even more than his last. Starring his Dogtooth actress Aggeliki Papouli, it will be interesting to see how the director can push the envelope yet again. I sincerely hope he can strike gold twice, as we’ve seen other related Greek films fail (like Attenberg, which I found quite bare of any sort of message).
The Playlist has dug up new photos from Film Press Plus for the film that will premiere at Venice Film Festival within in the next month. Check them out above and below, along with the first synopsis.
Synopsis:
A Nurse, a Paramedic, a Gymnast and her Coach have formed a service for hire. They stand in for dead people by appointment, hired by the relatives, friends, or colleagues of the deceased. The company is called Alps while their leader, the Paramedic, calls himself Mont Blanc.
Although the Alps members operate under a discipline regime demanded by their leader, the Nurse doesn’t… From the director of the Oscar-nominated DOGTOOTH
Alps doesn’t have US distribution yet, but check back for updates and look for reviews in early September from Venice.
