Entertainment Weekly (via The Muppet Mindset) has our first look at Forgetting Sarah Marshall writer/star Jason Segel‘s brand new Muppet movie, tentatively titled The Muppets. Da Ali G Show and Flight of the Conchords director James Bobin is helming this new film from a script by Segel and his FSM director Nicholas Stoller. The film will star Segel as well as Amy Adams and Chris Cooper.

This first image doesn’t come with many new surprises, except for one. If you’ve never seen the Muppet holding the iPhone in the right corner before, it’s because it is a brand new creation. His name is Walter and he teams with Kermit the Frog and his muppet pals “to put on a show to save their old theater.” Check out Segel’s explanation below, but click the image below first for hi-res.

Walter is the kind of guy who faints when he sees Kermit. Walter has a little bit of a self-confidence issue because he’s the only person like him that he’s seen aside from the Muppets….Segel explained. His dream is to meet the Muppets and be around people who are like him.

The Muppets hits theaters Christmas Day 2011.

What do you think of the first image? Were you a Muppets fan?
