Real Steel, the new Hugh Jackman film directed by Shawn Levy (Date Night, Night at the Museum), started shooting it’s live action scenes on Monday and USA Today gives us a first look at the film. The film is set in the future and is a boxing film with a twist. Instead of humans doing battle, we get 2,000 pound robots fighting. If you look at the picture above you may think your eyes are being deceived and the robot is made up of visual effects. Think again. These are real robots, 19 of which were created for the film and the filmmakers are using motion capture to put it all together.

Encouraged by executive producer Steven  Spielberg, these 8-foot giants are being filmed alongside motion-capture techniques rather than completely visual effects which is pretty awesome and definitely something I’m looking forward to.

There really isn’t much more known about the film and it is still over a year away but I can’t wait to hear more it. It sounds unique compared to the rest of the blockbusters nowadays and I’m interested to see how they pull it off.

What do you think? Do you think they can make the mo-cap work?
