Clearly a staging of a funeral, it’s easy to assume the filmmakers will be tackling the gruesome tale of the death of Gwen Stacy’s father, a noble cop who has been killed in the various Spider-Man comic incarnations in different ways. The common thread is always that Gwen blames the mysterious and masked Spider-Man for the death of her father — while loving Peter Parker. So if we assume the reboot will take on this tricky love/hate dichotomy – it is kind of a rehash of the Peter Parker/Harry Osborn arch revealed over the course of Sam Raimi’s uneven trilogy. However, with Marc Webb, director of the inventive and fun rom-com (500) Days of Summer, helming the still untitled reboot, I’m hopeful the double-life drama of Spider-Man will unfold in a fresh and thrilling way.
