Out of all the major summer blockbusters, Joe Johnston‘s Captain America: The First Avenger is the one I don’t know what to expect from. Matthew Vaughn‘s X-Men: First Class will certainly be visually striking, judging from his past work. Martin Campbells The Green Lantern looks like a bit of a failure. Kenneth Branagh‘s Thor may not be what I expect, but should certainly have some surprises in store. Jon Favreau‘s Cowboys & Aliens looks like quite a bit of fun. Michael Bay‘s Transformers: Dark of the Moon will likely continue his streak of terrible filmmaking. J.J. Abram‘s Super 8 has a high chance to be the highlight. Skipping past a whole bunch of others, it brings us to Captain America. Joe Johnston even admitted The Wolfman turned out to be a cash grab, saying he has put his heart and soul into Captain America. The man hasn’t made a good film in awhile, but something about the 1940’s style matched with Chris Evans‘ charm has me intrigued.

We’ve posted a few high-resolution photos and the trailer has reportedly been delayed due to the footage not being up to par, but today we have the first look at Chris Evans in full garb. It actually looks pretty slick. See it below from the fastest issue of Entertainment Weekly (via CBM).

Plot: The year is 1942, and Steve Rogers is a scrawny lad who desperately wants to fight Nazis for his country but can’t because he’s been deemed physically unfit. His fate — and his physique — is radically transformed when he signs up for Project: Rebirth, a secret military operation that turns wimps into studs using drugs and assorted sci-fi hoo-ha. There’s a love interest (Major Peggy Carter, played Haley Atwell), there’s a sidekick (Bucky Barnes, played by Sebastian Stans), and there’s the Red Skull (Hugo Weaving), Hitler’s treacherous head of advanced weaponry, whose own plan for world domination involves a magical object known as The Tesseract (comic fans know it better as The Cosmic Cube).

Captain America: The First Avenger hits theaters July 22nd, 2011.

What do you think of Evans in costume?
