Tim Burton is a seasoned vet when it comes to creating strange worlds and realms for audiences to explore in his films (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; The Nightmare Before Christmas) and he isn’t calming down at all with his latest venture. Burton was signed early last year to remake a live-action version of the Disney animated classic “Alice in Wonderland” (which was based off of the book by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson). He quickly cast some big names such as Johnny Depp, Michael Sheen, and Anne Hathaway into what Disney expects to be a box office hit. Burton just recently casted Australian actress Mia Wasikowska to play the lead role of Alice. He felt she was perfect because of her emotional toughness, being an older person with a younger girls mentality. The script is penned by Linda Woolverton who also wrote such films as The Lion King, Aladdin, and Beauty and The Beast. The film is expected to be previewed at the D23 Expo in September but will not be publicly released until March 5, 2010. For now, Disney is releasing some character posters to satisfy the public craving. View them after the break.
Below we get a first glance into the oddities of Burton‘s latest characters who definitely not fit into our world. On the left Johnny Depp is pictured in his role as The Mad Hatter, a trippy and nutty character that producers say is “indescribable.” In the center, Anne Hathaway is dressed as the “beautiful” and “eccentric” White Queen. Last is Helena Bonham Carter with her digitally swelled head as The Red Queen.
