Usually more of an action hero/object-of-female-affection kind of actor, Antonio Banderas has decided to throw off the shackles of past stereotypes and star in Pedro Almodóvar’s highly anticipated new film, The Skin I Inhabit. Based on the book, Tarantula, by Theirry Jonque, Banderas wil play a weird plastic surgeon who seeks vengeance on the man who sexually assaulted his daughter

Almodóvar has rewritten his adaption nine times according to indieWire, but it’s clear from this picture, first shown on c7nema.net, of a masked, bald Elena Anaya and an odd-looking Banderas, that the adaptation will be using some of the more sinister and creepy elements of the novel.

Co-starring in the film are Marisa Paredes, Jan Corney, Roberto Alamo, and Blanca Suárez. Sony Pictures Classic have picked up the movie for distribution but as yet no release date has been confirmed. Expect a Cannes 2011 premiere.

Do you think The Skin that I Inhabit looks like one to watch?
