The feature-length documentary American Grindhouse explores the hidden history of the American Exploitation Film. The movie digs deep into this often overlooked category of U.S. cinema and unearths the shameless and occasionally shocking origins of this popular entertainment. Exploitation Cinema has left an indelible mark on American culture, and this informative and amusing documentary proves that its principles–and popularity–endure to this day.
Narrated by Academy Award-nominated actor Robert Forster, this documentary boasts an impressive line-up of interviewees, including John Landis, Joe Dante, Herschell Gordon Lewis, Allison Anders, David Hess, and many more- many of them participating in their first-ever on-camera interviews.
In addition to the interviews, the documentary also includes clips and scenes from over 200 exploitation films, providing a very comprehensive view of the genre.
American Grindhouse is the first feature-length documentary from director Elijah Drenner and is in the Spotlight Premieres section of this year’s SXSW.
