Yesterday I got to interview Brian Taylor, one of the geniuses behind both of the Crank films and Gamer. While we mostly discussed Gamer in event of the blu-ray release, I did of course get several updates on Crank 3, the recently talked about Cash Money Dollars, and a few of their other projects as well. To give a quick sum up of what he said: Crank 3 may most likely happen (in 3D), they don’t know what they’re doing next, and a few of their projects range from their usual fair of hard R to even PG-13. So if you’re a fan of this directing duo then you should be happy to know they have more than a few projects on the horizon.
Do you think Crank 3 could still happen?
Brian Taylor: It could, they’ve approached us for it and we wanna make another movie or two before that. We just don’t wanna run right into that. We’ve already got a story for Crank 3.
Can you say what it is?
Brian Taylor: (laughs) No I can’t say what it is, but at some point when the money is there, when everyone wants to do it, and when Jason [Statham] has got a whole in his schedule. We definitely don’t want to do it next, we want to make another movie or two first. I think they’ll be a Crank 3 someday and I think it’ll be 3D.
So there’s a good chance we’ll see a Crank 3D?
Brian Taylor: There’s a good chance you’ll see it, but probably not for a year or so.
Would you ever consider taking it further than Crank 3? I’d love to see a Crank 5 or Crank 6.
Brian Taylor: Who knows, who knows. It’s so fun to do a Crank movie, it’s like a vacation. I can’t believe we get paid for it. If it really comes up, if the money is there, and if everyone wants to do it and if Jason is available… Why would we say no? They’re just so fun.
What’s going on with Cash Money Dollars?
Brian Taylor: That’s going around to studios so we don’t know what’s going on, but we’re trying to set that up. There’s two or three projects we’re trying to set up so I don’t know what’s going to happen first. That’s a script we’ve had for a little while and it’s cool.
You also got Bonaventura shopping it around which is a good sign it’s good.
Brian Taylor: Yeah, he’s amazing. He’s kind of our guy know. He’s got a couple of other things he wants us to do right now. I just don’t know what the next movie is going to be right now, but we also got a TV show with NBC that might happen.
I’ve heard of that, what’s that called again?
Brian Taylor: It’s called Zeroes.
Is there anything going on with that right now?
Brian Taylor: Yeah, it’s really expensive for a pilot so I don’t know if they’re going to want to pop for it. They love it so if it doesn’t happen this season then it might happen next season. Right now, everything is just really up in the air. We don’t know what our next movie is going to be, but probably within the next month we’ll have a good idea.
Do you imagine that film with Lorenzo being another hard R film?
Brian Taylor: We’ve got a couple of things and some of them are hard R stuff and some of them are PG-13 broader Lethal Weapon type studio stuff. I don’t really know what’s going to happen next.
Can you talk about any other projects we maybe haven’t heard about?
Brian Taylor: Not really, when it’s real…we don’t want to start throwing everything out there before it’s real. The announcement on Cash Money Dollars going around surprised us and we don’t even know how that got out there. We don’t even appreciate that being out there. Until something it is real we don’t want to talk about. Always in Hollywood there’s about fifty things that are either going to happen or they’re not. Why worry about it until it’s green-lit?
I know you guys are also working on an 80’s stuntman type action movie, is that something you’re just writing or plan on directing?
Brian Taylor: How did you hear about that one?
I think I heard you or Mark talk about it during an interview way back, not sure though.
Brian Taylor: Wow, that’s obscure. Well, that’s another. That’s finished and that could happen. That’s a cool fucking movie man.
So is that something you guys plan on directing?
Brian Taylor: We maybe…we actually wrote if for a friend of ours to direct, but we’re not sure if that’s going to happen. What happens with us a lot…Crank 2 was actually written for someone else to direct and we didn’t think we were going to do Crank 2. We just thought we’d write it and produce it, but by the time you’re done with the script you fall in love with it and say,” who the fuck else is going to direct this thing?” It’s so nuts and then we end up doing it. That could end up happening with the stunt movie too. That’s a great movie, but I don’t know. It’s all up in there, but it could be something completely different. We’ve talked to several studios about a lot of different movies, but we’re just going to pick something that seems fun and run with it.
Make sure to check out the full interview in the near future at DVD Talk.
