According to Variety, Eric Bana is in final negotiations for a leading role in director Joe Wright’s assassin thriller, Hanna. He is likely to take the part as the father of Saoirse Ronan’s title character, Hanna who has been raised to be a remorseless murder.
The story follows Hanna as she connects with a French family, forms a friendship with their daughter and goes through the pangs of adolescence. When the girl is dragged back to her father’s world and discovers that she was bred as a killing machine in a CIA prison camp, she must fight her way to a free life.
Bana has certainly played some merciless characters throughout his career, including Nero in Star Trek and to some degree Henry VIII in The Other Boleyn Girl. However in taking this role he will be extending his abilities into psychological ruthlessness. If done well, and if screen time allows, this could be one of Bana’s most powerful roles.
Filming begins in Germany this March.
